Problem
I forgot my Windows sign-in PIN and can't log in to my laptop.
Symptoms
Windows rejects the PIN you enter at the lock screen, or you simply can't remember it and are locked out of your laptop.
Solution
Use the "I forgot my PIN" link on the sign-in screen to verify your identity and set a new one, or change it from Settings if you're already signed in.
Step-by-step instructions
- 1At the Windows sign-in screen, click "I forgot my PIN" below the PIN entry box.
- 2Verify your identity when prompted - this may use your Microsoft account or work account password, or a code sent to your email/phone.
- 3Follow the remaining prompts, then enter and confirm a new PIN.
- 4If you are already signed in and just want to change your PIN: go to Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options.
- 5Select PIN (Windows Hello) and click Change PIN (or Remove, then Add, if Change isn't available).
- 6Enter your current account password to verify, then set and confirm your new PIN.
- 7Contact IT if "I forgot my PIN" doesn't appear, identity verification fails, or the laptop is company-managed and needs IT to reset it remotely.
